Adds GraalVM Native Image support to Java applications by analyzing build tools, detecting frameworks, configuring metadata, and iteratively fixing compilation errors until successful.
Overview
Java Add GraalVM Native Image Support is a skill that adds GraalVM native image compilation support to existing Java applications. It analyzes the project structure, detects the build tool (Maven or Gradle) and framework (Spring Boot, Quarkus, Micronaut, or generic Java), configures the GraalVM Native Build Tools plugin, builds the native image, and iteratively diagnoses and fixes compilation errors until the build succeeds.
Key Features
- Automatic Project Detection - Identifies the build tool (Maven via
pom.xmlor Gradle viabuild.gradle/build.gradle.kts) and framework (Spring Boot, Quarkus, Micronaut) by analyzing dependencies - Build Tool Configuration - Adds the GraalVM Native Build Tools plugin with appropriate profile configuration for Maven or plugin blocks for Gradle, including main class detection and image naming
- Framework-Specific Handling - Applies framework-appropriate configurations, such as Spring Boot's AOT processing, Quarkus native profile, or Micronaut's GraalVM metadata
- Iterative Error Resolution - Builds the native image and when errors occur, analyzes build output to apply fixes such as adding reflection metadata, reachability configurations, or substitution classes, then rebuilds until successful
- Metadata Configuration - Generates
META-INF/native-imageconfiguration files includingreflect-config.json,resource-config.json, andserialization-config.jsonas needed
Who is this for?
This skill is for Java developers who want to compile their applications to GraalVM native images for faster startup and lower memory usage. It is especially valuable for teams deploying to serverless or container environments where cold start performance matters, or developers working with frameworks that support native compilation but need help with the initial configuration and troubleshooting.
